We are collectively experiencing an unprecedented situation. While it is nearly impossible to embark on a traditional adventure out in the world, bringing the spirit of adventure to your current reality might make the difference between surviving and thriving right now.
Embodying a spirit of adventure means embracing Growth. It means being okay with getting uncomfortable, stretching your comfort zone, learning new things, making mistakes. It means being resilient and adaptable.
This is true while traversing a remote mountain top, and it applies equally to navigating a well lived life. In life, embracing a spirit of adventure can open new possibilities and lead to authentic connection with yourself, others, and the world around you.
Here are a few ways to embrace the spirit of adventure in your daily life.
Pause and reflect
Whether you are one of the many who suddenly find themselves with a lot of free time or you are insanely busy, now is a great time to reflect on what brings you joy. It’s a great opportunity to explore how you might optimize your life to align with what you love to do. How can you do more of what you are really good at while figuring out ways to outsource the rest?
Explore a new identity
Without the usual routine that keeps many of us going through the motions, there is space to redefine who we are and how we show up in the world. Maybe it’s changing a few small things, like how you dress or what you read or watch on TV. Or having positive thoughts and conversations instead of the tired old coffee break conversations you had at the office. Maybe it’s time to re-orient your entire life towards something new. There’s no time like the present to break free from a career or lifestyle that is sucking the life out of you every day, and choose your own adventure!
Slowing down, letting go
Life is short. Things can change really quickly. This point has been made abundantly clear. This is not to emphasize a mentality of fear, but rather to highlight that it’s important to live the life you want to NOW and do it with intention. Living the life you want is not just about what you want to DO - it’s as much, if not more, about how you want to BE. Many people are taking the opportunity right now to let go of expectations, let go of control of all the little details and allowing themselves to enjoy the ride, enjoy the unfolding present.
While we are living under unusual restrictions around travel and adventure, nature is still there, right outside. Take a break from all the Zoom calls and put your feet on the earth. Grounding is a technique that involves putting your bare feet on the bare ground and just experiencing that connection. Taking a hike in the woods or even just walking or biking around the neighborhood can help you shift your experience in a positive direction. And hey, you don’t have to have your butt in a chair in your cubicle, so take advantage!
Letting go of expectations, enjoying the ride, letting go of control, less doing and more being - None of this means not setting goals or not striving to become the best version of yourself and living your best life. It does mean there’s another way to move through this human experience. No matter how strange or challenging a particular situation may be. It does offer a hint of how to find flow and joy while creating your ideal life and relating to others and your environment.
In the wilderness, there are always constraints. Always things you can’t control. It’s no different in ‘real life’. The trick is to adapt and overcome. To observe and be hyper aware of the conditions and forge mindfully ahead anyways. And have fun. After all, life is an adventure. Explore it!
